Event Description:
“The Art of Cloudscapes” Workshop slated at Pebble Hill Plantation
Thomas University Professor of Art, Richard Curtis is slated to lead an art workshop at Pebble Hill Plantation November 6th.  “Looking Skyward: The Art of Cloudscapes” will explore the intricacies of cloud formations through drawing, a lecture, and exhibit tour of the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery.
In this workshop, local artist Rich Curtis will lead participants in a study of cloud formations in art. Using well-known examples from Romanticism, as well as paintings from Pebble Hill’s permanent collection, Curtis will inspire participants to “look skyward” and appreciate the changing nature of clouds. The second half of the workshop will be filled with hands-on activities, viewing, and drawing cloudscapes with a variety of media.
According to Curtis, cloud studies were a favorite subject among artists of the Romantic period.
“We will look at some well-known examples from JMW Turner, John Constable, and others,” Curtis said. “Then, we will look at some examples of artwork from the same time period that are in the collection of sporting art on display in the Pebble Hill Galleries. We will discuss how artists, then and now, use cloudscapes as an extension of, and to add drama to, their landscape painting.”

With the hands-on exercises, participants will start by making quick gesture drawings to get the basic shape and movement of clouds in the sky. “After that, we will make a couple more finished studies to take back to the Learning Center. The last exercise will be to use the studies to create a larger composition that highlights the activity and drama of the cloudscape,” said Curtis.
