Name: Something to Crow About: The Mental Bandwidth of Crows and their Relatives
Date: October 5, 2019
Time: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM EDT
Event Description:
Did you know that crows are extremely intelligent and have the largest brain to body ratio among all bird species? They are some of the only animals capable of making and using tools, they have complex social structures sometimes involving dozens of individuals, and they even share information with one another about some of the humans they encounter. Join Jim Cox, Stoddard Bird Lab Director at Tall Timbers Research Station, for a fascinating program on how the intelligence in crows sets them apart from other birds. With more than 120 species of crows across the world, southwest Georgia is home to only two, the American Crow and the Fish Crow. Jim will share recent research on the intriguing intelligence and behavior of this common animal. He will also talk about how humans and crows have engaged with one another, highlighting the Native American perspectives, Colonial and Industrial Ages, and what we know about them today. Following the discussion, Jim will lead a walk on the grounds of Pebble Hill in search of groups of crows demonstrating their unique behaviors as well as pointing behaviors of other native birds. Bring binoculars, water, and wear comfortable shoes for the walk. $10.00/participant. Register early by calling: 229-226-2344. Please note, cash or check only will be accepted at the door.
